Roger Federer concluded his 2019 in a good mood. While he was training in Dubai, he was named GQ’s Most Stylish Man of the Decade. Organized as a fan-voting contest, the election had 16 celebrities ‘battling’ for the award. To claim the first position, the 38-year-old ‘defeated’ (in this order): A$AP Rocky, Jonah Hill, Harry Styles, and finally Timothee Chalamet. Fun fact: he had asked his followers to vote for him as he was trailing behind Styles in the semi final - the GQ Most Stylish Man of the Decade was “all he wanted for Christmas.”
On social media, many people trolled Federer, deeming that he does not deserve the title. The World No. 3 stayed at play, admitting that his win was entirely due to his fans’ help and not because he has an extraordinary fashion sense.
In the press conference in Hangzhou (an exhibition event that he played on December 28 and 29), the Basel native spoke about his award and made a funny hypothesis, teasing Alexander Zverev, who was also present.
“Maybe Sascha [Zverev] may one day become the most elegant man of the year, but I have already become the most elegant man of the decade,” he joked.
“I think tennis leaves a great legacy in terms of style. I try to have my personal style, classic and modern at the same time,” the Swiss added.
While Federer is training in Dubai, waiting to kick off his 2020 season at the Australian Open, Zverev is participating to the first ever ATP Cup. The German lost his two singles matches so far, against Stefanos Tsitsipas and Alex De Minaur.
