In an interview, Rafael Nadal's uncle Toni commented on the importance of training over playing matches. The 58-year-old Mallorcan said: "The competition is the consequence of having trained well and now it seems that the more you compete, the better you train. The competition is a part of the training but not a decisive one. The main thing is training. I never liked Rafael to play many tournaments, but as you grow up you tend to give more importance to the tournaments but I don't think that's the right thing. Competing a lot is not necessary, that's what I did with Rafael and also the kids I train now in the Academy. Competition sometimes bothers you, when you give too much importance to that is not good."

About the importance of values, Toni added: "That gives you values if you do it well. If in tennis you cheat balls or you put the win above everything, that's not good. In life and tennis, if you work, you get results. If you behave well, getting results is easier," said Toni, who also criticized tennis for not introducing too many changes. "The only change you had was the tie-break on 6-all. In other sports, many things have changed."

On Nadal, David Goffin said: "He's very much at home. He knows how to move around. This is his courtyard. He knows how to move around the court. It's very difficult to follow his pace. It's very difficult to be more intense than he is because he's able to return every single ball, to use as much strength as possible, to keep his opponents running around the court."
