Tennis legend Martina Navratilova is known for her support of gay rights so it must come as no surprise that the 18 time Grand Slam singles champion has come out strongly against Margaret Court's latest sermon where Court has attacked transgenders.
Navratilova sent a series of tweets on the topic - in one she commented, "Pathetic. In every way ... shame on Margaret"
In another response, the 63-year-old Navratilova says, "Margaret hasn't changed her mind on gays so she sure won't change it on trans either - amazing how strong her homophobia truly is."
In a third post, Navratilova says, "It's outrageous and so wrong. We don't need to change or rewrite history when it comes to anyone's accomplishments but we do not need to celebrate them. Margaret Court is hiding behind her Bible as many have done before her and will do after her. Let's not keep elevating it."
Navratilova, who is openly gay herself, will attend the upcoming Australian Open where Court will be recognized but not celebrated for the 50th anniversary of her winning the Grand Slam (all the four Grand Slam titles in one year). Court, who has won more Grand Slam singles titles than any other player in tennis history, had demanded that Tennis Australia celebrate her Grand Slam run in the same way that they had for Rod Laver in 2019, to which Tennis Australia had said that they would recognize her achievement but not celebrate the same.
