Eugenie Bouchard strung a robust performance against eighth seed Caroline Garcia on Wednesday, in Auckland. The Canadian, who received a main draw wildcard, stunned the Frenchwoman in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 in 88 minutes in their round-of-16 match. This is the first time since 2019 Auckland, Bouchard has won two consecutive main-draw matches.
The former world no. 5 who is currently ranked 262nd in the world, saved four of the five break points she faced while converted three (out of 11) break points of her own. Bouchard also won nearly 73% points behind her first service to Garcia's near-about 62%. She will next play either American Amanda Anisimova or Russian Daria Kasatkina in the quarter-finals.
Earlier, Alize Cornet saw off the day's proceedings with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over the tournament second seed, and world no. 15, Petra Martic of Croatia. Cornet converted two of five break points while saving six of the eight break points she faced. She hit three aces – all of which came in the final game of the third set while she served for the match – and had 22 winners outright. After the match, Cornet joked about the number of aces she hit. "I guess it just happened to be the best time to do my first aces of the match! But three in a row? Come on! I don’t even know how it happened."
Cornet will play Jessica Pegula in the quarter-finals. The American defeated Slovenia's Tamara Zidansek 6-2, 6-3.
