The men's edition of the 2025 Australian Open was won by Jannik Sinner almost without any difficulty. The world number 1 has shown all his superiority on hard courts and the only hard moment of his tournament was the small discomfort he suffered against Rune in the round of sixteen.
More generally, it is not unfair to say that this edition of the Happy Slam was not memorable. There have been very few truly epic matches and there is a feeling that this tournament will not be remembered much in the future.
A boring tournamentOn the latest edition of the 'Nothing Major' podcast, former American ace Sam Querrey expressed his candid opinion on the 2025 AO: "To be honest, the 2025 edition of the Australian Open did not offer an exceptional level. The only truly spectacular match that comes to mind is the one between Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinals, but otherwise I don't remember any epic or memorable challenges."
The former world No.11 continued: "When we look back on this tournament in six months and ask ourselves what epic matches there were, maybe we won't remember a single one.
Sinner has proven that he is the best in the world right now by a wide margin, especially on this surface, but it was a bit of a disappointing tournament from a fan point of view."
The 2025 AO was the seventh tournament in history to have ended without even a five-set match from the round of 16 onwards.
The lack of uncertainty of the results – also due to Sinner's dominance – and the retirement of Nole Djokovic during the semifinal against Sascha Zverev are factors that have certainly not helped to increase the spectacle of this edition.
The final ended three sets to zero in favor of the world number 1, who did not concede a single break point to his opponent.
The Italian ace is not to blame, but his opponents will have to find new solutions to prevent Grand Slam tournaments from becoming boring.
