Ben Shelton's 2025 season has started on a positive note. The American ace has shown that he has made progresses compared to last year and it is no coincidence that he reached the semifinals at the 2025 Australian Open.
Ben overcame several obstacles during his run at Melbourne Park defeating opponents such as Lorenzo Musetti, Gael Monfils and Lorenzo Sonego. He had to face current world No.1 Jannik Sinner in the semifinals, an almost unbeatable player on hard courts in the last twelve months.
The American tennis player played an excellent first set on the iconic Rod Laver Arena, finding himself twice with a break advantage and having two set points at 6-5. Ben didn't take advantage of those precious chances and his match basically ended there.
The Italian champion dominated the tiebreak and did not give him any more opportunities in the next two sets.
Jimmy Connors reflected on Shelton's riseOn the latest edition of his well-known podcast, ATP legend Jimmy Connors reflected on Shelton's current status: “He should have confidence but he has to get a little more – not very high highs and the low lows.
He has to find his happy medium of what it takes to win and improve on that. If he can find that consistency and try to avoid the losses to quite a bit below him.”
Connors also added: “He has got to walk out there and no matter who he plays he has to reach that as good as I can be level. If he can do that and find his consistency with the big game that he has, he should be okay.”
The next goal of the American player will be to improve his level on other surfaces as well.
Ben has not yet reached his little one on the red clay and has yet to discover all the secrets to play well on the grass.
However, Shelton has shown that he is on the right track from all points of view and that he can become a factor in the most prestigious tournaments as early as this year.
