Iga Swiatek, 22, was broken 10+ times in a match for the first time in her career during her Montreal semifinal against Jessica Pegula. On Saturday, Swiatek lost her service 11 times as Pegula upset the Pole 6-2 6-7 (4) 6-4. Previously, Jelena Ostapenko and newly-retired Anett Kontaveit came close to breaking Swiatek 10 times in a match. At the 2020 Australian Open, Swiatek was broken nine times by Kontaveit and the Pole also lost her service nine times when she met Ostapenko in Dubai last year. Against Pegula, there wasn't much consistency on Swiatek's service and the Pole paid the ultimate price by losing the match.

Swiatek loses her service 11 times against Pegula

In the first set against Pegula, Swiatek broke the American twice but still easily lost the opener because she got broken four times. The second set was quite something as Swiatek broke Pegula four times but also lost her service four games. In the end, the second set had to be resolved in a tie-break, where Swiatek won the last five points to force a decider. In the third set, Swiatek got broken three times. After blowing a 2-0 third-set lead, Swiatek also had a 4-2 lead before suffering back-to-back breaks and losing the match. After the loss, Swiatek revealed she didn't feel physically fresh.

"Well, for sure physically it was a tough tournament. Especially that match against Karolina being delayed a couple of times, you know. I didn't really have time during the tournament to actually rest for a while and do nothing. So it wasn't easy, but it didn't change the fact that I just fought until the end. And this match today for sure physically was tough, like having only 16 hours to recover. For sure I'm not an easy sleeper, so it's hard to sleep after such a match as yesterday with a lot of adrenaline, you know. You kind of have to deal with that. It's the life of a tennis player. So I did what I could," Swiatek said after losing to Pegula.
