Finally, after two years of absence, Novak Djokovic came back to the United States. The last memory of him is the final of the US Open, lost against Daniil Medvedev, in 2021. It was that which prevented him from completing the Calendar Grand Slam. Then, the impossibility for the Serbian tennis player to land on US territory. The cause, as everyone knows, was his decision not to get vaccinated against Covid-19, in times of health emergency, he was not allowed entry last year.
No Cincinnati and especially no US Open. Now, the current world number two returns for the Western & Southern Open, ATP Masters 1000 tournament.
In an interview for atptour.com, Nole explained: "I've spent a lot of family time, rest and preparation for tournaments here on American hard. It's been two years since I've been to America. So obviously I'm very excited and was really looking forward to coming. Haven't been to Cincinnati since 2019, so good to be back. Lots of young fans I've seen over the last couple of days on the training grounds which is always great to see and people love their tennis."
The audience present
For Djokovic already the first training sessions at the Cincinnati Open, with the crowd ready to welcome him: "It was fantastic, to tell the truth. I made a joke with my coach and asked him if we are in the right field because we thought it was a match It's really amazing. I'm very thankful for having so many people in a practice session, which is great.
The atmosphere was great today during training. People were really into it. This gives me even more inspiration to play my best tennis of the tournament. I like the feeling I get after more than 20 years of professional tennis.
There is still a fire burning. There's still that drive and motivation to really come to the biggest sporting events and try to win, try to win titles and try and bring some good vibes to the crowd."
