AEW Dark

Episode 28 of AEW Dark from an undisclosed location featured veteran QT Marshall, pretty boy Kip Sabian, and burly Wardlow being a brute.

Here’s the lineup with ratings (watch, solid, okay, pass) on which matches are worth your time:

  • Lee Johnson vs QT Marshall (okay)
  • Ryan Pyles vs Wardlow (okay)
  • Tony Donati vs Kip Sabian (pass)

It was a short, straightforward show. All squashes and showcases. QT strutted some skills. Wardlow utilized a powerhouse finisher. The main event was the most competitive, but it was never in doubt who would win.

Watch the show here.

The episode had three different pairs on commentary. Tony Schiavone and Cody Rhodes started the top of the show, Excalibur and Taz were the creamy middle, and Tony and Jimmy Havoc completed the sandwich for the main event. Dasha Gonzalez handled ring announcer duties.

Lee Johnson vs QT Marshall

QT was Johnson’s trainer. The teacher utilized hip tosses and arm drags early on the student. QT also caught a flying crossbody and turned it into a suplex. The finish came when QT once again caught a flying attack for a sweet backbreaker to front pancake combo.

A swanton bomb came next for QT’s victory. QT was also busted open underneath the eye. I’m not sure when it happened.

Ryan Pyles vs Wardlow

MJF accompanied his big man. Wardlow was dressed in his usual suited attire. He stripped off the top layers then went to work. Ding, ding, ding. Pyles ran right into Wardlow’s clutches. Wardlow launched his opponent for a spinning whirlybird F5.

Wardlow put one foot on the chest of Pyles to pick up the three count.

Tony Donati vs Kip Sabian

Penelope Ford joined her man. She interfered when Donati had control. Top move was a hammerlock brainbuster from Donati. For the finish, Sabian anticipated a springboarding Donati. Sabian got him with a dropkick, a rope-hung snap suplex, a couple of strikes, a Russian leg sweep, then an octopus submission to win.

There’s not much to talk about with these matches. It was obvious who was going to win. I would have preferred Sabian to look more dominant, since he is competing in the TNT Championship tournament. QT continues to pull out neat maneuvers with old man flair. He’s like the equivalent to dad jokes but if the jokes are actually funny. Wardlow made a statement with his one-move match. That should work to build him back up as the memory fades of his cage match loss to Cody Rhodes.

The highlight of the show was commentary. Everyone was loose and cracking jokes. Jimmy Havoc told a tale of living with Sabian and seeing him walk around in underwear. Excalibur and Taz brought insight into the intimidation tactics of Wardlow undressing. Cody was busting QT’s apples about his hometown and hair transplants.

My biggest takeaway is that MJF needs to chill on the tanner. His hands were burnt orange.
