Former world number one Angelique Kerber won’t be able to play Stuttgart Open after the tournament's director announced it won’t take place this year due to the coronavirus outbreak. The decision was followed by the WTA and ATP tours’ verdict to suspend all tennis tournaments until 7th June. Kerber, two times winner of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, regrets that things turned out this way, but she understands that health and well-being are more important.
“As every year, I was counting the day till the start of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix… but there are more important things right now-health and safety are the main priority. Take care of yourself and the ones around you” wrote Kerber on Instagram.
Due to the worldwide spread of the coronavirus, the Porsche AG decided not to hold this year's Porsche Tennis Grand Prix.
“We’re extremely sorry that the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix cannot be played this year", stated Tournament Director Markus Günthardt. "We would have loved to have once again offered the region’s fans world class tennis in the Porsche Arena. The special circumstances unfortunately prevent the tournament from taking place. The health of the players, ball girls, spectators and all the other staff is the highest priority for us. We are looking forward to the 2021 tournament from 17 to 25 April.” Günthardt continued.
“The professional tennis season is now suspended through 7 June, including the ATP Challenger Tour and ITF World Tennis Tour. At this time, tournaments taking place from 8 June onwards [which includes Queen’s] are still planning to go ahead as per the published schedule.” was written in the latest joint statement released by ATP and WTA.
