Czech tennis star Tomas Berdych says the doping controls in tennis are very stringent and difficult to imagine, in an interview published by Tenisovysvet.

The former Wimbledon finalist says, “A lot of people might not be able to imagine it, but 365 days a year we had to give an hour where we would be that day so that they could come and test you for that sample at any time. You have to write that, for example, you will be here at the theater from seven to eight."

Berdych says that there are several times during their careers when the players are wrong about their whereabouts and the time mentioned. "If I did not count the tournament controls, there could be twenty-five in a year."

Speaking about the doping control process, Berdych says, "The person goes to the bathroom with you. They stand very close there. It's not a joke. There would be plenty of stories, we would sit here for a long time."

As per the ITF rules, if a player misses on providing a sample by not being at the location that he has mentioned on three ocassions, the third occasion may result in a doping sanction.

The former World No. 4 Berdych announced his retirement from tennis at the season-ending Nitto ATP Finals. He won 13 ATP titles during his career and besides the final at Wimbledon, he also reached the semi-finals at all the other Grand Slam tournaments.
