Aussie veteran Samantha Stosur says she is hoping to do better at the WTA Brisbane International this year as compared to recent years, according to 7news.com.

The 35-year-old Stosur is playing her 21st season on the tour but has struggled at the Brisbane event in recent years - she has lost in the first round five times in the past six years.

Stosur says she hopes to start by winning her first match in the tournament. "You want that to happen. But sometimes when you want something so bad it doesn't quite happen."

The Australian is feeling confident after a strong end to the 2019 season in which she reached the final of the Guangzhou International Women's Open final and reached the semi-finals at the season-ending WTA Finals with Shuai Zhang. "The last part (of 2019) through China especially was really rewarding for me both on the singles and doubles court. It's always nice to finish (the year) with a highlight and going into the New Year thinking 'that finished well now I have to try and pick it all up again' And besides who knows when I will be able to play here in Brisbane again?"

After being the top-ranked Australian for many years, Stosur says she is happy that that baton has passed on to Ash Barty, who is now ranked No. 1 in the world and says she feels she can learn some things from her younger countrywoman. "Although she is younger than me she has achieved incredible things in the last year. She is right at the top of the sport. I can probably learn more from her now than she could learn from me."
