Dominic Thiem set some record earnings this year. He earned $7.13 million career prize money plus $706,000 as a bonus by ATP for playing eight Masters 1000s and finishing the year as a world No. 4. If he had played all the nine Masters 1000, which he did not as he skipped the Cincinnati Masters, he would have received a $882,000 bonus. His agent Herwig Straka said: "He is definitely the richest Austrian tennis player ever but I think money comes itself, that's never the goal."
Thiem has now reached $22 million prize money, 10m. more than his compatriot, the three-time French Open winner Thomas Muster who got $12m. Asked if he influences the choice of how to make investments, Straka replied: "That's family business, other experts are called, but my suggestion matters too". Thiem pays 50 percent taxes as he lives in Austria. He also has lucrative deals with Bank Austria, Rolex, Kia, Red Bull, Adidas and Babolat. In most of the contracts, there are bonuses for special results and year-end No. 1 rankings positions.
Thiem's coach Nicolas Massu spoke about the 26-year-old losing the ATP Finals championship clash to Stefanos Tsitsipas: "Losing this way such an important match is difficult to accept but it's things that happen in sports, you switch from happiness to sadness all of a sudden. Thiem had an amazing year, he has finished as a world No. 4 and I am very grateful. You learn from many things that are happening. It has been an amazing year and luckily it went well. What makes me calmer is the work you do more than the results you achieve."
