Living tennis legend Venus Williams showed her great will and her strength to continue playing tennis, in the first round of the Western & Southern Open, played on the hard-courts of Cincinnati. In the 1st round, the American beat Veronika Kudermetova, and in the post match she gave several interesting words at the press conference.
Here are, specifically, her statements: "I'm always happy to return to Cincinnati, for me it's like playing at home. This is only my first game in the tournament but my goal is to play more and more and find rhythm, I always want to improve more but I am aware that it is not easy. This year has been very hard and demanding due to the many injuries but now I'm just hoping for a little luck."
Venus hadn't beaten a Top-20 since 2019 but here in Cincinnati she proved she's still competitive, recovering both sets from a 1-4 run.
Venus Williams reveals her current tennis level, after 1st round win in CincinnatiThe American tennis player then explained in the post-match: "When you're down, even with a double break, you start thinking about it in a simpler and more relaxed way, maybe I was just thinking about keeping the serve and then I saw how she would go. In the past I've always been used to being the one ahead, but recently and even today I've had to deal with these problems. It was all different, but this is tennis and that's what makes it exciting.
A victory at 43? The satisfaction of winning today is related to all the work I've done in recent months. Wimbledon crash shocked me, it was a really difficult time for me and now I'm very happy to be here. I did everything to come back as soon as possible and now I'm here, that's why this victory gives me so much satisfaction."
Talking about her level of tennis, Venus continued: "I think I'm at a better level than at the beginning of the season. The rain delays here were worrying me, I was traumatized by what happened in Auckland. I can't stop thinking about it, it doesn't have to happen again. However, my level is certainly better than at the beginning of the season and I just have to keep playing to be able to improve."
