Iga Swiatek revealed she feared her tennis journey might be over after suffering an ankle injury in 2017 that sidelined her for an extended period.
Swiatek, 21, suffered an ankle injury in mid-2017 that required surgery.
At the time, Swiatek was one of the most promising juniors in the world.
But as a junior, Swiatek never believed that becoming a pro tennis player would actually happen.
Eight months after the ankle surgery, Swiatek reached the semifinal of the 2018 French Open girls' singles event.
Swiatek on making a successful from an ankle surgery at 15"Well, at that point of my life, basically the problem was that I thought I'm not going to, like, play tennis anymore, because I was a teenager and it was a big thing already after surgery. It's not like I always knew that I'm going to be a tennis player. I feel like every year I needed to kind of prove myself that I'm going in the right direction. I still didn't believe that I'm going to be a pro until I actually came to WTA and won some matches. Also there was, like, the issue of if we're going to have money to continue, start like a little bit from the beginning, because this is something that suddenly may change your life path. I'm pretty happy that we managed, me and my dad, to make me come back. He also found resources for me to be able to train and have practices and find coaches," Swiatek said, per Sportskeeda.
Now, Swiatek is widely considered the best player in women's tennis.
Swiatek is a three-time Grand Slam champion and she has been ranked at No 1 since 2022 April.
This week, Swiatek is set to kick off her campaign at a WTA 1000 tournament in Rome.
In Rome, Swiatek won back-to-back titles in 2021 and 2022.
This year, Swiatek is aiming for a three-peat in Rome.
