Casper Ruud suggests that placing high expectations on himself may have played a part in him having a very disappointing 2023 season.
Last year, Ruud made two Grand Slam finals - reached a Masters final - debuted at the ATP Finals - reached a career-high ranking of No 2 in the world.
After a very strong 2022 season, Ruud was hoping to be a major threat at the Australian Open and Masters events in early 2023.
Instead, Ruud is just 11-9 in 2023 as his 2023 season has been marked so far by early exits and disappointing results.
Ruud suspects high expectations may have been a problem“I knew that this year was going to be a big challenge because the things that I did last year is not maybe going to happen every year you play. To reach two Grand Slam finals, obviously the Nitto ATP Finals in the end of the year, it’s not something that I expect to do every year. Obviously I’m trying my best. The thing is, when you’ve done something before, to reach for example a Grand Slam final, you know that it can happen again because you have been able to do it before, so why not again? I think your expectations are a little bit higher coming into tournaments, which can be dangerous. If it doesn’t go well, you think, What am I doing wrong? What happened? Last year I was able to do this, why can I not do it this year? It can be a little bit challenging. I said the main goal this year is just to try to defend some of the tournaments, some points, try to keep myself in the top 10 in the end of the year, is something that will still be my main goal," Ruud said, per Tennis Majors.
Ruud's best result of the 2023 season came in Estoril, where he won two matches to win the title.
If not for a winning run in Estoril, Ruud would right now have a losing record in 2023.
Ruud is now set to play at the Rome Masters as he is hoping to finally do well at one big event.
