The RBC Heritage goes to Matt Fitzpatrick (66 70 63 68) who in the USA beats defending champion Jordan Spieth (68 67 66 66) on the third playoff hole and celebrates his second career title on the PGA Tour, the first in an event other than a Major. After his triumph at the US Open in June 2022, the Englishman in South Carolina prevailed thanks to a birdie in the playoffs. On the course of the Harbor Town Golf Links (par 71) of Hilton Head Island, both closed the 72 regulation holes with a total of 267 (-17) strokes, but what made the difference was a feat by the 28-year-old from Sheffield who , last year, he finished second at the Italian Open.
Matt Fitzpatrick, resultsTowards the Ryder Cup in Rome, Europe beats the USA. Not only Spieth, runner up. Patrick Cantlay was in fact classified 3rd with 268 (-16) ahead of Xander Schauffele, 4th with 269 (-15), and Sahith Theegala and Hayden Buckley, both 5th with 270 (-14).
Out of the Top 10 Scottie Scheffler, 11/0 with 272 (-12). With this result, Scheffler squandered the opportunity to return to first place in the world rankings. The Spaniard Jon Rahm therefore remains on the throne who, after his feat at The Masters, did not go beyond 15th place with 273 (-11).
The exploit earned Fitzpatrick $3,600,000 for a total prize pool of $20,000,000. And it allowed him to move from 16th to 8th position in the world rankings and from 81st to 22nd in the FedEx Cup. The second Englishman to win the RBC Heritage after Nick Faldo (1984), in his career he boasts also eight statements (a figure including a Major, the US Open in fact) on the DP World Tour.
First Justin Rose, then Matt Wallace, then Fitzpatrick. Sheffield's talent also stood out as the third Englishman to make him a 2022-2023 PGA Tour event. A circumstance that had occurred in the past only twice (in 2010 and in 2017-2018).
Another joy for Fitzpatrick, among the big names in the Europe team at the Ryder Cup in Rome, scheduled from 29 September to 1 October next, on the course of the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club.
