Mats Wilander spent beautiful words for 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams, who is close to retiring, probably after the 2022 US Open.

Wilander told: "Serena Williams has moved the boundaries of sport and brought tennis into the living room of people who were not used to watching this discipline. The day of her farewell to tennis will surely be very sad, having won a lot for a very long period of time. Serena has not only shown that she is one of the greatest athletes ever, but she has also flaunted her humanity. One can only feel enormous respect and admiration for Serena."

Greg Rusedski also talked about the US star: "Serena is undoubtedly the greatest ever. She has taken women's tennis to another level along with her sister Venus. Even those who know absolutely nothing about tennis know Serena Williams. It would be great if she retired by winning the US Open like Pete Sampras did. Woe to underestimate it. At the same time, I understand her decision to retire. We cannot go on indefinitely."

Serena at a farewell tournament

The announcement of Serena Williams’s retirement left everyone speechless. Although it was not a bolt from the blue, the American's decision to hang up the racket generated reactions around the world.

The former WTA No. 1, who has played very little in the past two seasons, will say goodbye to the world of tennis after the US Open 2022. Barring a sensational backlash in New York, Serena will not be able to match the all-time record of Margaret Court Slam.

"I love tennis madly, but the countdown has begun. There comes a time in life when we have to decide to move in a different direction. I want to focus on being a mom and finally explore other sides of my personality. I will enjoy these last few weeks on the pitch as much as possible and then a new chapter in my life will begin," Williams wrote on Instagram.

Regardless of Margaret Court's record, they all agree to crown Serena as the greatest ever.
