Although Rafael Nadal lost in the first round of Cincinnati, the Spaniard was the only player who managed to steal a set from the champion Borna Coric. ATP world number 7 Stefanos Tsitsipas, world number 9 Felix Auger-Aliassime, and world number 11 Cameron Norrie all failed to win at least one set against the surprising Croatian player.

On top of this, the match against Coric was Nadal’s first after his injury, as Barbara Schett remarked for Eurosport.

“Don’t forget that was his first match since that injury,” Schett said on Eurosport.

“The match is always different from practice. And whoever had an abdominal injury and a tear on the abdominal muscles knows how it feels. You have to be extremely cautious. You’re worried that you’re going to reinjure it again.

Therefore, Rafael Nadal, with a good pre-tournament preparation, is still in the cards for a positive run at Flushing Meadows despite his lack of matches played.

Rafael Nadal would have wanted to play more matches

Speaking to the Tennis Channel, Chanda Rubin said that Nadal would certainly have preferred to play a few more matches before the US Open.

"Yeah, certainly, Rafael Nadal would have wanted to get a few more matches and this was not an easy one.

He's lost a charge a couple times before. So, you know, this is a match, he had to battle in, but he thought when he won that second set that he had, kind of, turned things around that," she said. "He was gonna get that extra push.

He had 0-30 early in the third just was a little bit off, and that's kind of to be expected because Nadal is so underdone in matches recently and the first match on hardcourts, it takes a little getting used to. Hopefully, he'll get right back to it and will kind of build on this even though he lost it," she added.
