Emiko McCoy, member of Serena Williams Design Crew, shared how Serena inspired her to take a designer job at Nike.
“Oh, we could talk about Serena all day. I’m originally from Dunn, North Carolina. My day-to-day job is the apparel designer for Nike Pro (Women’s). The reason why I came to Nike or that I found about the Serena Williams Design Crew, I just remember being in New York and I would see Serena on the billboard. So I remember passing by that every single day and it definitely inspired me not because it was about being at the top of her game, but also because she looked like me. SWDC is actually through design, bringing in those BIPOC Black, Indigenous, and people of color) designers. You have that diversity in that room. You have that conversation about diversity. For someone that came from a rural area, this is an amazing journey to be able to be connected to some great people,” said Emiko.

In her recent Instagram post, Serena Williams promoted two of her designers, among which was Emiko as well.
“Serena Williams Design Crew was created to change the world of design and pass the mic to fresh faces and diverse voices. Meet @emikomccoy and @jcwize. For Emiko McCoy and Juan Huerta, their journeys are proof that people from all walks of life deserve to dream big,” Serena Williams wrote on Instagram.
Recently, Serena Williams announced on social media that her Nike design team had completed a new line of clothing with botanical patterns.
“The Serena Williams Design Crew is back! Created by a cohort of multidisciplinary designers, this collection was brought to life using bold botanical prints and intricate patterns for versatile pieces meant to elevate your streetwear. Coming soon!” Serena wrote on Instagram.
