He also said the company will be re-examining the decision after WrestleMania.
We’ve seen it all week. The people WWE is trusting to offer to media outlets for interviews during the build-up to WrestleMania 36 have to be prepared to handle a much different set of questions than they would in any other year.
There aren’t many of them. Triple H, Becky Lynch, and Seth Rollins seem to make up the core group. Rollins demonstrated why he got the nod with some fun answers in yesterday’s piece from Hollywood Life. He really affirms the company’s decision with his thoughtful answers in this one from Sports Illustrated’s Jimmy Traina.
One of his best came when asked if he personally thinks WWE made the right call continuing to produce shows after the NBA shutdown, and social distancing guidelines were put in place to fight the spread of the coronavirus in the United States.
“I don’t know. I’m not a medical expert. Obviously the airports are still open. Should they close? I don’t know. I wish I had answers. I’m sure a lot of people do. Right now, I’m just trying to stay as hygienic as possible, keep my distance from as many people as I can. As of now, I feel great. Knock on wood, I’ve been able to avoid this thing. I know a lot of families and people who have been affected by it. It’s extremely contagious and it’s very dangerous. I wish I had more answers. I wish I knew what was the right thing to do. After WrestleMania, we’re gonna recollect and see where we’re gonna go from here. Right now, I’m very humble and grateful that I have a job that still needs me. A lot of Americans are not in that boat and their futures are uncertain. So if providing them with some entertainment can help them out, then I feel like, we’re being productive in doing something right.”
It’s not the “we’re excited to put smiles on people’s faces” company line. But it works even better, at least for this writer, because it’s human and relatable. Most of don’t know what to make of the current situation. No one thought they’d be living in a pandemic world just a few months ago. Maybe we should have. I don’t know.
There are those words again, though. By humbly admitting he doesn’t have any more answers than the rest of us, Seth’s explanation is more palatable to me than any exclamation WWE can put on a shirt.
Rollins is great throughout the interview, and it’s well worth a read. There’s more on his relationship with Lynch, and his concerns about his coffee shop in his hometown - and its employees who don’t have the financial safety net his career as a pro wrestler gives him. There’s also some wrestling talk, too.
If he keeps this up, he might have to turn babyface again.
