While tennis is suspended all around the world due to the coronavirus crisis, we took the time to look more closely at Roger Federer Foundation, the charity organization that was born in 2003 with the mission to “enhance a world where children living in poverty are able to take control of their future and actively shape it.”
Since 2003, the association has grown enormously, but, given Federer’s success on the tour and his many public apparitions, it’s no surprise to that.
From the chart above, we can see that the foundation has gone from earning around $400.000 in 2006 to gaining almost $10 million in 2018. It’s worth noticing the steady growth in donations across the years.
In 2020, Roger Federer Foundation raised more than $3,5 million only from the Match For Africa 6 exhibition held in Cape Town. Therefore, another year with great incomes for the charity organization is on the line.
“Currently we are conducting programs in six countries in Southern Africa (Botswana, Malawi, Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa) plus Switzerland. Since its start the foundation has spent 52 million USD for its education initiatives conducted in 7000 primary schools and preschools.” claims the foundation.
Along with the foundation, Roger Federer has also got wealthier in the last decade. Just in 2019 alone, the Swiss Maestro earned more than $93 million, him being declared the highest-paid tennis player of the year, surpassing the likes of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams.
In times like these it’s important to look at examples that show the power of a helping hand. COVID-19 put a lot of problems to a large number of people and, in order to escape the pandemic, we need to show solidarity.
