The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced on Tuesday, 24th March 2020 that it would be postponing the 2020 Tokyo Olympics to 2021. The decision has been welcomed by all sporting federations, including the International Tennis Federation (ITF).
In a media release, the ITF shared that it welcomed the decision from the Olympics’ governing body’s decision in light of the Covid-19 pandemic that does not seem to be abating.
The ITF’s statement said, “The global health situation continues to evolve at an extraordinary pace and we are faced with an unprecedented situation that calls for responsible leadership and making informed decisions. Whilst this is a bitter disappointment for all those who have been preparing and training hard, we all understand that the protection of human life, health and safety, comes first.
“The ITF supports this decision and will continue to collaborate fully with the IOC and the IPC going forward to 2021. We look forward to seeing all athletes, volunteers and fans when it is safe for us to meet and participate at our best at the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020.”
Earlier, Canada’s Olympic and Paralympic committees announced that no Canadian athlete would travel to participate at the Tokyo Games if they were to go ahead, despite the prevalent pandemic. Canadian tennis players such as Vasek Pospisil, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Gabriela Dabrowski supported this call, among other Canadian athletes, who were to potentially play the Olympic Games.
This is the first time since the Second World War that an Olympic event will not be held in its quadrennial cycle.
