Former world No. 5 Kevin Anderson said having to play Serb Novak Djokovic in his comeback match wasn't ideal but he was happy with the way he performed against the world No. 2 at the ATP Cup.

Anderson played his last tournament of the 2019 season at Wimbledon as few months later he underwent a season-ending knee surgery, with the hope he would enter 2020 fully healthy.

On Saturday, 33-year-old Anderson returned to the court for the first time in six months and suffered a tight 7-6 (5) 7-6 (6) loss to Djokovic.

The big-serving South-African could have easily forced a decider but he failed to convert a set point on his serve at 6-5 in the second set tie-break.

"Coming first match back and straight away playing Novak's obviously a little bit tough,” Anderson said, per the ATP Cup. “Definitely got off to a little bit of a nervous start but I am really pleased with the way I was able to turn it around and felt [like I] pretty much went toe-to-toe from midway through the first set through the rest of the match.”
