Former World No.1 Doubles player Rennae Stubbs in recent interview covered the various facets of tennis, ranging from the on-court coaching issue to what it takes to be a commentator.

Speaking about the most important traits needed to be a good commentator, she said, “It helps if you were a player first — for the public at home to trust what you’re saying. The most important thing is you have to get thoughts out succinctly and quickly. And not dwell or stumble. TV is not for everybody; just being a great player isn’t enough to make you a great commentator. People watching at home love tennis, but they don’t necessarily know the ins and outs of professional matches. Our job is to make them understand what they’re seeing.”

When asked about the much controversial on-court coaching issue, Stubbs added, I’m so torn by it. I think that tennis has always been difficult because you’re an individual and you have to make decisions out there. You have to take a game plan and stick to it, or change things up if it’s not working.”

Having coached former World No.1 Karolina Pliskova in the past, is she open to coaching again? “Yes, given the right circumstances. It’s a hard job. It’s stressful. You’re like a parent, and you’re responsible for wins and losses. But I enjoyed it, and I think I’m good at it.”

Who are the favourites for Wimbledon according to her?  “Roger Federer will be right there at the end. Novak Djokovic will be difficult to beat. It will have a lot to do with his mindset. Federer is very comfortable there. On the women’s side, you just throw your hands up in the air. Ash Barty — how will she perform after winning the French Open? The big question mark is Serena. Time is starting to tick for her to break the record [for most Grand Slam singles titles]. It wouldn’t surprise me if she made the finals.”
