Japanese tennis star Kei Nishikori admitted it wasn't easy to even win a single game against record 11-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal during their quarterfinal meeting.
Nadal, seeded at No. 2, cruised past the seventh-seeded Japanese 6-1 6-1 6-3 to set up a semi-final showdown against his old rival, Roger Federer.
The Spaniard broke the Japanese seven times during the match, while he lost his serve only once.
"He hit very heavy, and he was serving well,” Nishikori said post-match, per the Roland Garros website. "He made me play every point. Even to get one game, it feel like very long to get just one game. He's playing great tennis this week."
As many feared, a tough road to the quarterfinal took its toll on Nishikori, who had no strength to perform at a high level against Nadal.
Nishikori recovered from two breaks down to beat Serb Laszlo Djere in the third round before he also recovered from two break down to beat French Benoit Paire in the round-of-16.
"I think I gotta keep trying to work, to finish straight sets but that means I'm not maybe good enough tennis-wise and also mental...I'm always stuck in the quarterfinals in Grand Slams. I think next goal is to be in a semifinal or final," Nishikori acknowledged, per Ravi Ubha.
However, Nishikori will be leaving the French Open in positive spirits as he is looking forward to the grass season.
"I've been playing as best as I can at the moment on clay in this tournament, so I can move on with good feelings towards coming grass season," Nishikori insisted, per Nikkan Sports.
