The 21-year-old American Taylor Fritz is through to the second round in Eastbourne following a commanding 6-2, 6-3 triumph over a qualifier Paul Jubb in precisely an hour. The NCAA Singles Championship winner had the opportunity to make an ATP debut but Taylor proved to be too strong, hitting 12 aces and getting broken only once to mount the pressure on his rival who couldn't endure it, suffering four breaks to propel Fritz into the second round. Taylor broke in the second game of the match following a terrible smash from Jubb at the net, losing serve in the very next game when Jubb won the battle of backhands to pull the break back. From 2-2, Fritz shifted into a higher gear and won 16 of the last 17 points to claim the opener 6-2, serving well and breaking the Briton at love in game six and again at 5-2, hoping for more of the same in set number two.

There, Paul gave serve away in the fourth game following a return winner from Taylor who sealed the deal with three service winners at 5-3 to march into the last 16. In the battle of the Americans, Steve Johnson ousted Reilly Opelka 7-6, 6-3 in 80 minutes for only the eighth triumph in 2019. Opelka landed 13 aces and that wasn't enough to keep him safe, losing serve three times from as many chances offered to Johnson and taking only 17 points on the return, breaking at 2-3 in the second set before Johnson brought the encounter home with the better performance in the closing games. There were no break points in the opening set and Johnson claimed it 7-4 in the tie break after a thrilling forehand crosscourt winner that stayed away from Reilly's reach. They traded breaks in games five and six in set number two to stay neck and neck before Steve raised his level to grab another break with a stunning forehand winner in game seven, forging the lead and carrying it home with the third straight break at 5-3, you guess, with another forehand winner.

Hubert Hurkacz needed just 65 minutes to dismiss the 7th seed Marco Cecchinato, playing against two break points and gifting his serve only once, not enough for the Italian to keep him in the hunt as he suffered three breaks to push the Pole over the top. The 5th seed Fernando Verdasco made a winning start after a hard-fought 6-7, 6-4, 6-1 win over John Millman in more than two and a half hours. The Spaniard won just two points more in the end, repelling 11 out of 12 break points and delivering two breaks in sets two and three each to cross the finish line first and stay on the title course.
