What a phenomenon
Social media is raving about Matthijs de Ligt again after he scored for Ajax in their Champions League semi-final second leg clash with Tottenham.
Spurs travelled to Amsterdam in hope of turning around a one-goal deficit in their semi-final clash with Ajax.
After Donny van de Beek’s goal handed Ajax a 1-0 win in the first leg, Spurs had to score two away from home in order to qualify.
That was always going to be a tough ask but Spurs’ task got even harder just four minutes into the clash.
De Ligt key for Ajax yet again
That is because Ajax’s captain fantastic Matthijs de Ligt scored yet another huge goal for the Amsterdam side.
De Ligt burst onto the scene in the 2016/17 season as a 17-year-old, full of potential.
While he made 11 appearances in the Eredivisie, it was the Europa League where he really made his name.
De Ligt featured in nine of Ajax’s games including the final against Manchester United.
Since then De Ligt has gone from strength to strength in such a short period of time.
Despite being just 19 years old, the centre-back is current Ajax captain and you could argue he’s at least in the top five central defenders in world football right now.
Most wouldn’t argue with that opinion after his first-half goal against Tottenham.
The youngster lost Kieran Tripper and towered over Dele Alli to score a brilliant glancing header.
Now, everyone is appreciating the phenomenon that is Matthijs de Ligt on social media.

Social media reacts to De Ligt’s goal
Following his goal, several football fans and journalists were simply stunned by the ability and potential De Ligt possesses.
Matthias De Ligt joins Mozart, Enrico Fermi, Bobby Fischer, Blaise Pascal and Clara Schumann on my list of prodigious teens who make me feel extremely old and incompetent

Trying to think of centre-halves in history so accomplished at the age of just 19. Tends to be a position where you notice them much later in age. De Ligt unreal.
Bergomi? Baresi?

De Ligt made his debut at 17 years of age, became Ajax’s captain at 18 and made his 100th appearance at 19. He is captaining his team to a Champions League final after scoring against Juventus and Spurs.

I honestly cannot find a single flaw in Matthijs de Ligt’s game. It’s like someone has entered a real life “Create a Player”-mode and just put “99” on everything defensively, then added unreal physical abilities and as much pace as possible along with that. He’s simply unreal.

£100m on de Ligt would be such good value, for any club. Given his age, it’d be peanuts over a 10-12 year stint. Would throw it all at him.
