World no. 2 Alexander Zverev has raised his level at the Miami Open following four early losses. Alexander will chase his third semi-final in Miami against Arthur Fils, hoping to defend last year's points and remain on the title course.

Zverev missed a massive chance to become the 30th world no. 1 player in ATP history. The German barely collected 200 ATP points in Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, Acapulco and Indian Wells. He used an early exit in the desert to recover and make a fresh start in Miami.

World no. 2 defeated Jordan Thompson in the fourth round for a place in the last eight. Thus, he arranged his fifth duel against the young Frenchman, Arthur Fils, seeking the fourth triumph.

Zverev and Fils battled for the first time in the Hamburg semi-final two years ago. The more experienced player earned a 6-2, 6-4 victory in an hour and a half. Alexander denied all three break points and secured three return games that carried him over the top.

Their second duel came in Halle last year, and the home player prevailed 6-7, 6-3, 6-4 after nearly two and a half hours. Zverev played against one break point, defending it and keeping the pressure on the other side. Arthur played well in the opener and took it in the tie break.

Alexander provided two breaks in sets two and three, moving over the top and reaching the last four. A month later, they fought in the ATP 500 Hamburg final. It was a massive battle, with the two rivals pushing each other to the limits for three and a half hours.

Fils took the opener, and Zverev responded in set number two to force a decider after two hours. The German served well in the final set and created five break chances. The Frenchman saved them and stormed over the home favorite in the tie break to lift a trophy.

Their most recent duel came at last year's Paris Masters. Zverev scored a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory in two hours and ten minutes, delivering his third victory over Fils. It was a tight duel, with Alexander saving four of five break points and providing two breaks from six opportunities.

If the German scores three more wins in Miami and lifts a trophy, he would move 1785 points behind Jannik Sinner. Thus, Alexander would be in a good position to become the world's best player before Rome, although he would need more deep runs in Monte Carlo, Munich and Madrid.
