Coco Gauff is off to an impressive start to her WTA Finals campaign after beating world No. 6 and close friend Jessica Pegula 6-3 6-2.
After winning the WTA 1000 tournament in Beijing and reaching the Wuhan semifinal, the 20-year-old continued her strong form in Riyadh.
While the 2023 US Open champion got broken once in each set, it should be noted that her troublesome serve wasn't big of an issue this time since she only had two double faults during the match. And Gauff serving well reflected pretty positively for her on the outcome of the match.
After earning the first break of the match in the fourth game and then blowing it instantly in the following game, the world No. 3 remained calm and broke Pegula again in the sixth game to go 4-2 up before serving out for the opener three games later.
In the second set, something similar was seen as Gauff claimed an early break but the elder American got it back to tie the set to two games apiece. But it didn't lead to a comeback or anything like that after the 20-year-old responded with back-to-back breaks and won the next four games to complete her win with a total of five games lost.
Coco Gauff© WTA Finals Riyadh/X - Fair Use Gauff was right before the matchSince the 2023 US Open champion is good friends with Pegula and they practiced together in Florida just before going to the WTA Finals, the reporters wanted to know before the match if that could make it a tricky matchup.
"It's never been difficult for me. I think it's just something that I guess is embedded in our sport honestly. I practiced with Jess last week in Florida. Obviously I'm going to play her here. We're used to it. The top eight, maybe you don't want to practice with someone the week of that's in your group. You kind of have only like four players to choose from. Yeah, in general I think at other tournaments, usually when you're seeded, you try to practice with another seed because you know you're not going to play them first round. In general, I feel like it doesn't feel that different from other tournaments," Gauff said in her pre-tournament presser.
In her next match, the top-ranked American will play next against Iga Swiatek, who defeated Barbora Krejcikova earlier today.
