Jannik Sinner was eliminated in the quarterfinals in Montreal and will not be able to defend his 1,000 points won last year (when the Canadian Open was played in Toronto). The world’s number 1 - not at best physically after the tonsillitis that had forced him to skip the Paris Olympics - was defeated by Andrey Rublev in three sets.

The young Italian appeared far from 100% of form and knows he will have to work hard to reach the top at the US Open, where he will try to improve on the round of 16 reached in 2023. The 2024 Australian Open champion has had several physical problems in recent months and has not been able to achieve the desired results.

A hip injury had prevented him from training to his best before the French Open, where he still reached the semi-finals losing to Carlos Alcaraz in five sets. A virus had affected him in the quarterfinal match against Daniil Medvedev at the Wimbledon Championships, when fans hoped to see him face Alcaraz again.

Jannik will have to play well in the second part of the season if he wants to keep his first position in the ATP ranking defending it from the assault of Novak Djokovic and especially Carlos Alcaraz. Sinner will have to defend many points in the autumn, while the Serbian and Spanish had more than the Italian last year until the US Open.

Jannik Sinner has excellent numbers

Fans and insiders expected much more from Jannik Sinner in Canada, also due to the absences of Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic.

"We often forget the great season I’m doing. I remember that I always reached the quarterfinals in all competitions I played. I won many games and I lost very few, with today we are 5 losses in the season. I don’t see the problem, in fact I think I have a great continuity of results". After losing to Andrey Rublev in the quarterfinals of the Montreal Masters 1000, Jannik Sinner wanted, perhaps for the first time in 2024, to reiterate what he has done and is doing during this incredible season. Every defeat seems almost a tragedy and the Italian ace, with courtesy, has decided to defend himself from some criticism too much.

Sinner first became the first Italian to win at the Australian Open and reach the top of the ranking, establishing himself as the new number one in the world; this last goal he achieved at Roland Garros. The statistics become even more incredible considering only the games played on concrete, the surface on which will be played from now until the end of 2024:

Sinner has in fact lost only 2 out of 26. The only ones to beat him were Carlos Alcaraz at the Masters 1000 in Indian Wells in the semifinals and, precisely, Rublev in Montreal. Both defeats came in three sets. The Italian champion will fly to Cincinnati with the knowledge that he is not in the best conditions, but with the goal of preparing himself to the maximum for the US Open. Sinner wants to win his second career Major in the American Slam and then he will start the long preparation for the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin. Again, the Italian star is the first qualified.

The Italian ace will play in Cincinnati

Sinner was heavily beaten in his country for missing the Olympics for the second time in a row. The Italian recently confessed that he was very ill at this decision: "I saw some of the Olympics, although I didn't watch much tennis. It broke my heart not to be able to go to Paris, the Games were one of my main goals of the season. In the end though, looking at everything from a broader perspective, Musetti won a bronze, so an Italian is happy and I am happy for him.”

The Italian ace admitted Rublev’s superiority in their match in Montreal: “Andrey played better in the important moments and deserved to win. My overall form is certainly far from 100%. I hope to get back in shape as soon as possible, even if it will not be possible to do miracles in five days. I won’t be 100% in Cincinnati, but I want to be 100% at the US Open, which is the most important event for me.”

Jannik has confirmed that he will be in Cincinnati next week through an Instagram post. The World number 1 will be able to earn points in Ohio, as he was eliminated by Dusan Lajovic in the second round last year. His main goal will be the US Open.
