Following a great performance at the Olympics and winning a bronze medal, Japanese golfer Hideki Matsuyama encountered an unfortunate situation. During a stopover in London between Paris and Memphis, his caddie’s bag was stolen from a restaurant. Matsuyama revealed that he lost only his wallet, while his caddie and coach had their passports stolen.

Currently, Matsuyama’s caddie and coach are in a difficult situation, waiting to obtain new visas. Matsuyama hopes they can rejoin the team as soon as possible. He explained that they were returning from Paris and had planned to spend a night in London when they faced this unexpected and unwelcome situation.

"It was an unfortunate situation. Luckily I only lost my wallet, but Shota, my caddie, and the coach, lost their passports, and we're trying hard now to get their visas back in line, and hopefully we can join us as a team as soon as possible," Matsuyama said, as quoted by Golf Monthly.

"We were just on our way back from Paris. We were just going to spend one night in London, and it happened in downtown London."

The Japanese golfer further noted that they were unaware of what had happened during a casual dinner. At some point, his caddie realized that his bag was missing. The situation unfolded suddenly, with the thief acting swiftly and escaping from the scene.

Hideki Matsuyama stressed that he currently has a new caddie on the bag, and this situation reminded him of the early days with his previous caddie on the bag, Shota. He mentioned that they worked through several things together as they adjusted to each other.

Matsuyama emphasized that the main focus was on teamwork with his caddie and playing well. He acknowledged that he wasn’t sure how Shota will react to these changes, but they will work through it.

He also stressed that his primary role remains unchanged: to play golf. Matsuyama mentioned that he stays in regular contact with his coach and appreciates the work of his new caddie, Taiga, who performed well during their recent round.

Reporters decided to lighten the mood by asking Matsuyama how they managed to pay for dinner after their wallets were stolen. Matsuyama revealed that they had already settled the bill before the theft occurred. Losing such valuable items is certainly not easy, but Matsuyama doesn't have much time to think about the thief and the incident, given the challenges that lie ahead.

The police have been informed of the incident and will be working in the coming days to find the thief and resolve the issue. Meanwhile, Matsuyama must focus on the upcoming challenges to achieve strong results once again. His performance at the Olympics provides him with optimism and represents a momentum he wants to capitalize on for success in future tournaments. The Japanese golfer has demonstrated that he can be great even when expectations are not particularly high.

Hideki Matsuyama on winning the bronze medal: I still have mixed feelings

After winning the bronze medal, Hideki Matsuyama expressed his emotions. The 32-year-old golfer was thrilled, especially since he had missed out on a medal in Tokyo three years ago. Matsuyama showed confidence and ambition, stressing that the gold medal was within his reach. Although he was not happy with the previous Olympic Games due to the absence of fans, he was pleased to play in front of an audience that showed a deep passion for golf. Despite some skepticism about whether the Parisian crowd would be so enthusiastic, it turned out that Paris truly loves golf.

"I missed a medal in Tokyo, so I'm glad I got one," Matsuyama said.

"But I still have mixed feelings because the gold medalist was next to me on the podium.

No spectators were allowed in Tokyo due to the coronavirus pandemic, so it was sad. I really enjoyed playing here this week in front of an enthusiastic gallery."

The Japanese golfer not only made himself proud but also brought joy to Japan by securing a medal in such tough competition. The winner was 27-year-old American Scottie Scheffler, who has been unstoppable this season. Tommy Fleetwood finished in second place, proving himself to be a golfer worth watching. This year's Olympics delivered plenty of excitement and great moments.  The support they received from fans throughout the day is truly a testament to golf's status as a global sport.

It's hard to predict what Matsuyama will achieve in the remainder of the season, but it is certain that he has the potential to accomplish great things. We will see what the Japanese golfer can show in the upcoming tournaments.
