Denis Shapovalov sounds off on Jannik Sinner avoiding ban after failed doping tests

Former world No. 10 Denis Shapovalov has made it clear that he pretty much thinks it is ridiculous that Jannik Sinner escaped a suspension after failing two doping tests.

Today, the tennis community was left shocked after it was announced that world No. 1 Sinner failed two doping tests in March after testing positive for a steroid - the first positive test came at the Indian Wells Masters and the other eight days later. But in the announcement, it was also said that it occurred "unintentionally" and that the prohibited substance - a metabolite of Clostebol - entered the 23-year-old Italian's body because of contaminated over-the-counter spray purchased by his physio.

While Sinner was stripped of his 400 ranking points from Indian Wells and $325k in tournament prize money, he wasn't slapped with any suspension.

And that decision hasn't sat well with some fans but also players - including Shapovalov - who used some strong words when addressing the situation.

"Can’t imagine what every other player that got banned for contaminated substances is feeling right now," Shapovalov wrote on X.

In a follow-up post, Shapovalov added: "Different rules for different players."

Nick Kyrgios agrees with Shapovalov

When the news came out, 2022 Wimbledon finalist Kyrgios couldn't believe that no suspension for Sinner was issued.

"Ridiculous - whether it was accidental or planned. You get tested twice with a banned (steroid) substance… you should be gone for 2 years. Your performance was enhanced. Massage cream…. Yeah nice (side eye emoji)," Kyrgios wrote.

Meanwhile, here is what the ATP had to say.

"We are encouraged that no fault or negligence has been found on Jannik Sinner’s part. We would also like to acknowledge the robustness of the investigation process and independent evaluation of the facts under the Tennis Anti-Doping Programme (TADP), which has allowed him to continue competing. This has been a challenging matter for Jannik and his team, and underscores the need for players and their entourages to take utmost care in the use of products or treatments. Integrity is paramount in our sport," the ATP said in a statement.
