Fanpage colleagues interviewed Heribert Mayr, the first coach of Jannik Sinner's tennis career when he was only 12 years old.

Here are his words, "Right now I am a tennis coach in Riscone, at the Brunico clubhouse, and I can say that I have coached among others Jannik Sinner. His return home? Yes, I was invited and it was a great emotion.

The last time I saw him was in Paris two years ago but a lot has changed since then. I congratulated him on winning the Australian Open and becoming number one in the world." Heribert revealed some curious background about his first meeting with the talent from San Candido and explained, "I met him when he was 7-8 years old and immediately you could see that he had something more than the others.

I coached him until he was 13, then he left here. Everything changed: at one point he was the Italian skiing champion, we were in the Spring and he told me he had made a decision, I was hurt when he said 'I'm quitting skiing,' his life was based on that, and fortunately it went well.

What did he manage to understand right away? The thing he had from an early age was the ability to read the opponent's game, he had a great vision of the game and I didn't have to explain anything to him, everything came naturally to him," the coach's closing remarks.

Jannik Sinner will be competing in the Olympic Games for the first time and is eager to represent Italy after winning the Davis Cup last November. The new world number one went to Rome for the usual medical checks as part of the CONI 'probable Olympic athletes' protocol.
