World no. 1 Novak Djokovic has yet to reach an ATP final in 2024! Novak entered the ATP 250 event in Geneva ahead of Roland Garros, seeking form and matches but falling to Tomas Machac in the semi-final. Tomas ousted Novak 6-4, 0-6, 6-1 in two hours and six minutes, scoring a notable win and entering his first ATP final. The match presented a strange scoreboard, with Novak leading 4-1 in the opener before dropping five straight games. World no. 1 bageled his rival in the second set but lost the ground in the decider, fading from the court and heading to Paris without form or momentum. Machac claimed one point more than Djokovic, outplaying world no. 1 behind the second serve and delivering five breaks from 12 opportunities. Novak converted four out of 11 break points, providing three in the second set and failing to make the difference in the remaining ones.

Tomas forged the advantage in the shortest exchanges, and Novak erased it in the mid-range ones, with nothing separating them in the rallies with nine strokes or more. The Serb denied two break points in the first game of the encounter, avoiding an early setback and creating an opportunity on the return in the next one. The Czech denied it with a service winner and held after a backhand error from the world's best player. Novak stepped in on the return in the fourth game, drawing Tomas' mistake and forging a 3-1 advantage. Djokovic cracked a backhand down the line winner in the next one, cementing the break and extending the advantage. Machac reduced the deficit with a service winner in game six and launched his comeback. The Czech painted a forehand down the line winner in the seventh game, pulling the break back. He saved a break point in the next one, drawing the Serb's mistake after an extended rally and locking the result at 4-4 after a powerful serve.

The Serb earned three set points on the return in game six and converted the second with a volley winner, delivering a bagel and gathering a boost ahead of the decider. Novak held at 30 in the first game of the final set, extending his streak and hoping for more return chances. Tomas grabbed the second game and made a push on the return in the next one. Djokovic netted a routine forehand and faced a break point in the third game. He placed a backhand long, losing serve and pushing his rival 2-1 in front. Novak forced Tomas' mistake in the fourth game, creating a break chance that could have brought him to the positive side. World no. 1 netted a routine backhand and missed an opportunity before the Czech landed a service winner, holding and forging a 3-1 lead. Novak struggled on serve again in the fifth game, netting a backhand and moving closer to the exit door.

Machac held after a deuce in the sixth game, landing a backhand down the line winner and forcing Djokovic to serve to stay in the match. World no. 1 generated five game points, wasting them and offering his rival a match point after a careless backhand. Novak placed another backhand beyond the baseline, losing serve for the third straight time and propelling his opponent over the top. Thus, Djokovic will travel to Paris without confidence, failing to deliver his best tennis this season and repeat his achievements from 2023. Novak will try to turn the tables at Roland Garros, defending 2000 ATP points and looking good to pass the ATP throne to Jannik Sinner. Setting his eyes on the most notable events, the Serb targets Roland Garros, Wimbledon, the Olympic Games and the US Open in the next three and a half months, hoping to extend his legacy and challenge much younger opponents at 37.
