Australian Davis Cup team captain Lleyton Hewitt applauded Jannik Sinner's performance against his team and his ability to back up what he did a day earlier against Novak Djokovic. After Matteo Arnaldi beat Alexei Popyrin to give Italy a 1-0 lead in the Davis Cup final, world No 12 Alex de Minaur entered the Sinner match in a must-win mode. Unfortunately for Australia, de Minaur stood no chance against Sinner as the Italian beat the Australian 6-3 6-0 and sealed Italy's win over Australia. On Saturday, Sinner beat Djokovic 6-2 2-6 7-5 to force a deciding rubber in the Italy and Serbia tie. Then, Sinner returned to the court for the deciding doubles match as he and Lorenzo Sonego beat Djokovic and Kecmanovic 6-3 6-4.
Hewitt: Sinner backed up what he did against Djokovic"Yeah, Jannik, he's played awesome all week. Yeah, the last few weeks, to be honest, last few months. So he showed why he's a top 3 or 4 player in the world at the moment. He backed up what he did yesterday against Novak and played extremely good tennis. I think the conditions and surface suit him perfectly, as well, which makes life pretty tough," Hewitt said after the final loss. For Australia, it was a heartbreaking end to what was another really good Davis Cup run. After losing to Canada in the 2022 Davis Cup final, Australia returned to the Davis Cup final in 2023 but again ended on the losing side. in Malaga, Australia was represented by de Minaur, Popyrin, Max Purcell, Jordan Thompson, and Matthew Ebden. Australia maybe didn't win the title but Hewitt underlined that he was "super proud" of the entire team. "I'm super proud of all the boys and the support staff and the team. We did absolutely everything we possibly could have, and we have come agonizingly close yet again," Hewitt said.
