Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley has shared that he "fully expects" Nick Kyrgios to be competing at Melbourne Park in January. Kyrgios, 28, underwent knee surgery in January before sustaining a wrist injury just after returning to action in June. Kyrgios, who has appeared in just one tournament in 2023, isn't signed up to play any events in the remainder of the year but recently confirmed that he is working on returning to tennis. "I personally believe in the communication that he's motivated to come back and play in January. He loves playing here ... in front of his crowd. He knows everyone wants him to play," Tiley said, via Nine's Wide World of Sports.

After a career-best season in 2022, 2023 has been marked by injuries and setbacks for Kyrgios. For Kyrgios, it was extremely disappointing to be forced to miss the Australian Open earlier this year. With that being said, there is no doubt that Kyrgios wants to be ready for the 2024 Australian Open and play in front of his home fans. "It's just a matter of his health. He's had a significant injury and in many cases for many athletes, it can be a career-ending injury. He's got over that and is in the process of still getting over that. I fully expect him to be here and be ready to play and provide us with the entertainment we want," Tiley said. Wherever and whenever Kyrgios plays, there is a lot of attention on the Australian. Kyrgios is one of the most entertaining players in the game and Tiley believes the 28-year-old Australian will provide a great show. "The long list of players we've got, he (Kyrgios) adds to it . I love having Nick around, he provides great entertainment, but he is a pleasure to be around. I think that he brings a level of excitement to the event," Tiley said.
