Yin Ruoning, new world number 1 in ranking

China's Yin Ruoning became the number one in the world of women's golf this Sunday by placing third in the LPGA Queen City Championship.

The 20-year-old is only the second Chinese woman to reach this first place in the ranking, after Feng Shanshan, who occupied this step of the podium from November 2017 to April 2018.

"It's very important to me. It's like a dream come true," Yin said. "I'm getting goosebumps. A number one ranking is an important step to follow in Shanshan's footsteps."

Yin Ruoning will play on a Chinese team coached by Feng at the Asian Games opening on September 23 in Hangzhou, China. "I haven't had much opportunity to talk to Shanshan," Yin said. "But I'm looking forward to coming back to China, playing the Asian Games and spending more time with her as she is the main coach of our national team."

Yin, who needed to be in the top four to surpass the American Lilia Vu and ascend to first place in the rankings, came third in the Queen City tournament. The Australian Minjee Lee won the title thanks to a birdie in the second playoff against the English Charley Hull.
