Ashleigh Barty shocked the sport world when, about a year and a half ago, she announced live on air that she was leaving tennis at just 25 years old.
Physical and especially mental health problems, with Ashleigh now helping the federation, but she is still happy to have said goodbye to the women's circuit early. In Australia, they miss her and the results of her countrywomen have so far disappointed her expectations.
In a recent interview with the Sydney Morning Herald, Barty talked about the WTA Tour and its protagonists, explaining: "There aren't many Australians in the Top 100 and that's something we're working on. To stay at the top you always have to play at your level higher, you must have continuity for 52 weeks with a specific program and only then can you maintain your position at the top.
I think it's very exciting for women's tennis, all this creates hunger, passion and motivation in all the tennis players who want to be the best and aim to become number one. There are many young people who are working, even in Australia, and want to grow and develop their game."
Ashleigh said she was understanding with Iga Swiatek who has found difficulties in this last part of the season.
Then, speaking about WTA tennis, especially focusing on the Top-10, Ashleigh said: "It takes time to understand how they fit in and how it is possible to grow with their game. I'm excited to follow my countrywomen, and other tennis players too, and I want to see where they can be in five or ten years.
The game has adapted to modernity and developed. Compared to the past, the Top-10 is more competitive and they are all great tennis players. Women are different game mixes and always manage to surprise."
The women's circuit has seen a great fight this year, four different Slam champions in the last four Slams and a constant battle for number one. The Polish Iga Swiatek, after more than a year, has recently given up the scepter of number one and now the Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka is first in the ranking.
