Stefanos Tsitsipas admits losing the 2021 French Open final to Novak Djokovic was "the most difficult moment of his career." Tsitsipas, 24, was playing great and up by two sets against Djokovic in his first Grand Slam final but then Djokovic stormed back to win 6-7 (6) 2-6 6-3 6-2 6-4.
"The most difficult moment was on Roland Garros 2021. I wasn’t able to close the match, I have no regrets. It was such a moment, at that moment I felt it was the best tennis of my life. It hurt me a lot to lose that match, my grandma passed away that day," Tsitsipas said, via Tennis-Infinity.
Tsitsipas on why he lost to Djokovic in the 2021 French Open finalWhen Tsitsipas returned to the French Open in 2022, he honestly admitted that his "stubbornness" cost him in the final a year earlier.
"There are things that didn't work for me after two sets to love up in Roland Garros. I guess I was always pretty stubborn, didn't want to change, because so far it was working for me, the thing that led me to being two sets to love up," Tsitsipas said at the time.
At the start of this season, Tsitsipas made his second Grand Slam final at the Australian Open. Again, Tsitsipas clashed against Djokovic. However, this time, the match didn't go the distance as Djokovic claimed a straight-set win to again prevent the Greek from winning his first Grand Slam title. At this year's French Open, Tsitsipas reached the quarterfinal before being ousted in straight sets by Carlos Alcaraz. At this past Wimbledon, Tsitsipas suffered a surprise defeat to Christopher Eubanks in the round-of-16. This week, Tsitsipas is playing in Los Cabos and officially kicking off his preparation for the US Open. It remains to be seen if Tsitsipas can make a really strong US Open run and potentially win his first Grand Slam title there.
