Matteo Berrettini is currently out with a second degree injury to the oblique abdominals. Yet another physical problem for the Roman tennis player, who had to give up the Monte-Carlo Masters 1000, a few hours before the match valid for the round of 16 against the future finalist Holger Rune.
His coach Vincenzo Santopadre, speaking to the microphones of the Italian newspaper Gazzetta Dello Sport, tried to answer this question: "His mood at the moment is not the best. Matteo is a very introspective boy who gets to the bottom of things. Last year after the surgery he returned winning two tournaments in a row. After that it was a continuous stop and go. He now he's paying a little bit of the price."
Then on the possibility of participating in the tournament in Rome: "Rome? At the moment it's more no than yes. It is useless to delude yourself. If things then proceed faster than expected we will be delighted to be able to play. Matteo planned to be in Munich and Madrid, where he made a final, a few years ago. He's gnawing, there's no denying it."
Then again: "Based on what the doctor Angelo Cotorro will tell us, he will understand if he can start physiotherapy, but first we will need to understand how the lesion is healing. It is a type of injury he has already had, so on the one hand he is more relaxed because he knows what to expect."
Then with regard to Berrettini's physique, unfortunately particularly prone to injuries: "His physical conformation genetically predisposes him to injuries. A physiotherapist once told me: I understand! Everyone is like that. That is, thin legs and a very developed trunk, only that with the game he has, Berrettini is more exposed to physical problems. Now it just takes a lot of patience."
A difficult moment for the former Wimbledon finalist, who was regaining good physical shape after an unfortunate American trip. Now the gaze is understandably focused on the next important commitments scheduled in the coming weeks.
First Madrid, then the Rome, a home tournament for Berrettini, who also failed to participate last year, to then end up at the final event of the clay season, Roland Garros. Fans legitimately wonder how many chances there are of the 27-year-old Italian taking part in these prestigious matches.
