Matteo Berrettini out of BMW Open in Munich after latest unfortunate setback

Matteo Berrettini is out of the BMW Open in Munich due to a grade 2 tear in his internal oblique muscle.

Berrettini, 27, was scheduled to make his second Munich appearance this year.

Unfortunately, Berrettini - the 2019 Munich champion - will have to wait for at least one more year to make his Munich return. 

Berrettini, a former world No 6, kicked off his clay season at the Monte Carlo Masters.

In the Principality, Berrettini made a very positive start as he defeated Maxime Cressy and Francisco Cerundolo to set up a round-of-16 meeting against Holger Rune.

But then on the day of his Monte Carlo round-of-16 match against Rune, Berrettini announced that he was withdrawing from the match after contracting an injury.

What's the injury Berrettini is dealing with?

"I don’t know where to start. I was finally finding my level and getting back to where I wanted to be, this is a difficult one. I’m very sad to announce I will not be able to play my match today in Monte Carlo. I felt some pain in my obliques during my match yesterday. The pain became significantly worse overnight. After consulting with my medical team we decided to have an MRI scan this morning. I have a grade 2 tear in my internal oblique muscle. I can’t thank you all enough for the support. It means so much and is what gets me through these difficult times," Berrettini announced on Thursday.

For Berrettini, this was devastating.

After battling injuries and setbacks for the entire 2022 season, Berrettini struggled with his game in the first three months of the 2023 season.

But after a positive start in Monte Carlo, Berrettini said he was feeling better and optimistic his luck would change for the better. 

Then, Berrettini suffered another injury.

It remains to be seen for how long Berrettini will be sidelined.
