ATP Madrid: Carlos Alcaraz downs Grigor Dimitrov and remains on title course

World no. 2 Carlos Alcaraz will compete against Alexander Zverev in the Madrid Masters fourth round. Carlos faced Grigor Dimitrov in round three at Manolo Santana Stadium and scored a 6-2, 7-5 triumph in an hour and 30 minutes. The home favorite was the only player on the court in the opener and came from 4-2 down in the second to emerge at the top with a late break. Alcaraz dropped 13 points in ten service games and dropped serve once from two chances offered to his opponent. He turned 44% of the return points into four breaks from six opportunities, enough to carry him over the top. Carlos fired 21 service winners and controlled the pace from the field with 15 direct points and ten unforced errors. Alcaraz had the upper hand in the shortest and most advanced exchanges and improved to 25-2 in 2023. Dimitrov sprayed a forehand error in the encounter's first game for a shaky start and an early setback.

Alcaraz seized it and delivered his second break to extend the advantage and serve for the opener at 5-2. The young gun fired a service winner for a hold at love in game eight and 6-2 in 35 minutes.

Dimitrov restored his strokes in the second set and produced three fine holds for a 3-2 advantage, already doing better than in the opener. Grigor fired a forehand winner in game six for two break points and converted the second after Carlos' wild forehand for a 4-2 lead and a boost. However, the home favorite stayed calm and broke back at love a few minutes later following a mighty forehand crosscourt that drew the rival's mistake. They served well in the next three games to lock the result at 5-5. Grigor served to secure a tie break and netted a routine forehand to experience two break points in game 11. The Bulgarian sprayed a forehand error on the first to lose serve and push the Spaniard closer to the finish line. Carlos served for the victory at 6-5 and landed a perfect drop shot winner to seal the deal and advance into the next round.
