A former champion placed a volley winner at the net in the fifth game to forge a 5-0 advantage and force the rival to serve to stay in the match. Hugo sprayed a forehand error to face a match point. Zverev converted it after the rival's double fault to emerge at the top and set a possible fourth-round clash against Carlos Alcaraz.
