A two-time Madrid Masters champion Alexander Zverev destroyed Hugo Grenier 6-1, 6-0 in 56 minutes for a place in the last 16 in Caja Magica. The German outplayed the opponent on serve and return and sailed over the top after rattling off the final ten games. Alexander won 33 points more than Hugo, serving at 86% and dropping five points in his games. The pressure stayed on the other side, and Grenier failed to deal with it. The Frenchman lost 65% of the points behind the initial shot and dropped serve six times from ten chances offered to a better-ranked opponent. Alexander hit 26 winners and nine unforced errors and left Hugo on four winners and 15 mistakes. Zverev had the upper hand in the shortest, mid-range and most extended exchanges to sail over the top and deliver his most dominant Masters 1000 victory!

Hugo opened a 40-15 advantage in the seventh game before dropping four straight points to hand the opener to Alexander after 24 minutes. Zverev landed a forehand winner at the start of the second set for another fine hold and grabbed a break at 30 in the next one after a forehand return winner. Hugo squandered game points at 0-3 and experienced another break after Alexander's backhand down the line return winner. A former champion placed a volley winner at the net in the fifth game to forge a 5-0 advantage and force the rival to serve to stay in the match. Hugo sprayed a forehand error to face a match point. Zverev converted it after the rival's double fault to emerge at the top and set a possible fourth-round clash against Carlos Alcaraz.
