Robin Haase does not necessarily agree with Toni Nadal's tennis quality claim

Former world No 33 Robin Haase says he does not necessarily agree with Toni Nadal's claim that the level of today's tennis is worse than it was 10 years ago.

Haase, 35, has been around the Tour for over a decade and a half and he is from the same generation as Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. 

"Depends how you look at it. Ten years ago you would have a really unbelievable top 20 or top 15. When going deep in Grand Slams they were only few surprises in the last 16. Now that top I would say is as not as strong as before. You had Roddick, Hewitt, Wawrinka, Davydenko, Nishikori. If you compare with now, it’s a little bit different. Toni is right, it’s a little bit weaker. But top one to 100, or 250; maybe even 400, is much stronger. The broader level of tennis is much better than it used to be. Now the guys that play challengers, they can do well on the ATP level. 10-15 years ago it was much easier to win a challenger. It’s pretty tough now," Haase told CLAY.

Haase does not necessarily agree with Toni Nadal

Last September, Toni Nadal provided one reason for why Nadal and Djokovic were still dominating tennis. 

“But Rafael and Djokovic are still winning. And if they keep winning with a worse game, the reality is very obvious. If I play and win with a worse game it means that my opponents are a little bit worse," Toni Nadal said last year. 

Last year, Nadal won the Australian Open and French Open, while Djokovic made it all the way at Wimbledon.

At the US Open, Nadal physically wasn't at his best while Djokovic wasn't allowed to play.

In the absence of Nadal and Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz won his first Grand Slam title. 

At the start of the 2023 season, Djokovic won the Australian Open.

Going into the French Open, many believe Nadal and Djokovic will again be among the top favorites for the title.
