Former world No 3 Elina Svitolina is set to return to action on the clay courts of Charleston, the tournament just announced.
Svitolina, 28, hasn't appeared in any tournaments since the 2022 Miami Open.
After being sidelined for the past 12 months, Svitolina is set to play again at a WTA event in Charleston, which is starting on April 3rd.
In early April, Svitolina will be making her second Charleston appearance.
In 2014, Svitolina reached the Charleston round-of-16 in her debut at the tournament.
Also this year in Charleston, Svitolina will take part in Tennis Plays for Peace Pro-Am - a charity event for Ukraine.
“Increasing awareness and raising funds for Ukraine is very important to us as a tournament and to our players. We are passionate about working with Elina, who has a deep and personal understanding of the needs in her home country right now, to further exemplify the mission of Tennis Plays for Peace and stand united with Ukraine," Charleston tournament director Bob Moran said in a statement.
Svitolina joins Elena Rybakina, Victoria Azarenka in CharlestonThe Charleston organizers are preparing to have a star-studded player field in 2023.
On March 1st, the Charleston organizers announced Rybakina and Azarenka as the participants in this year's event.
“Adding two Grand Slam champions to an already strong field reinforces the level of talent that will be on display in April at the Credit One Charleston Open. Elena is the defending Wimbledon champion and recently competed in the finals at the Australian Open. Victoria is consistently a top player on tour, winning two Australian Open titles, reaching three US Open finals and just last month playing in the semifinals in Melbourne. We are extremely proud of the caliber and depth of our player field and are excited for our fans to experience the best in women’s tennis in Charleston," Charleston tournament director Moran announced on March 1st.
It remains to be seen how well can Svitolina do in her comeback tournament.
