Daniil Medvedev acknowledged that he needed to play his absolute best against Novak Djokovic as he was thrilled about the fact that he was able "to play at a higher level" than the Serb.
On Friday, Medvedev defeated Djokovic 6-4 6-4 in the Dubai semifinal.
With that win, Medvedev ended Djokovic's perfect start to the season.
Also, Medvedev put an end to his four-match losing streak against Djokovic.
“When you play against Novak you just have to play your best. Kind of hope he doesn’t play his best on the day because when he plays his best, well he has 22 Grand Slams, so even if you play your best, it is going to be tough, not sure you win. I managed to play a higher level than him today. In the second set I didn’t face one break point, but there were so many 30/30 games. But I managed to stay composed and I am happy to be in the final tomorrow," Medvedev said, per the ATP website.
How Medvedev defeated Djokovic? After not a single break point was seen in the first three games of the match, Medvedev claimed back-to-back breaks in the fifth and seventh games to open a 5-2 first-set lead.
Down by two breaks, Djokovic refused to quit as he got one break back in the eighth game and served out the ninth game to cut the deficit to 5-4.
Serving for the first set in his second attempt in the 10th game, Medvedev kept his focus and was able to seal the opener.
After winning the first set, Medvedev also broke Djokovic in the very first game of the second set.
Up by a set and a break, Medvedev routinely held on to his serve for the rest of the match to complete a two-set win over Djokovic.
For Medvedev, it was his first win over Djokovic since the 2021 US Open final.
Medvedev is now set to meet Andrey Rublev in the Dubai final.
