Former Miami Open finalist Alexander Zverev has not been a happy camper at the Miami Masters in his last few trips to Florida. Alexander has lost in the opening match in three of the previous four Miami campaigns, with the recent defeat against Taro Daniel. The Italian with the wild card destroyed the German 6-0, 6-4 in an hour and 15 minutes in the second round. Alexander made a terrible start and failed to overpower the opponent in the second set after hitting over 30 unforced errors, mostly from his forehand. Daniel hit the same number of service winners as his tall rival and outplayed him entirely from the baseline after taming his strokes nicely. Taro dropped only 12 points behind the initial shot and never faced a break point, a rare scene in his encounters. The Japanese took almost half of the return points and turned them into four breaks, enough to emerge at the top and move into the last 32.

Both players served well in the next three games, with Daniel locking the result at 2-2 with another fine performance behind the initial shot. Taro fired a forehand down the line return winner in the fifth game and earned three break chances. Alexander played a terrible forehand on the first to drop serve at love and fall a set and a break down. Daniel held at love in game six to confirm the advantage and served for the victory at 5-4. He produced another hold at love after the rival's loose backhand to seal the deal in style and complete a rock-solid performance.
