At the beginning of the season, Rafael Nadal was theoretically still in contention for number one in the ranking but the hard premature defeat in the second round of the Australian Open led the Majorcan to lose many points and in recent weeks the situation has even worsened.

Nadal dropped out of the world Top 5 and the situation could get even worse in the coming weeks, starting with the American tour with the Indian Wells and Miami tournaments. Rafa could even drop out of the world Top Ten, a situation that hasn't officially occurred since April 2005.

Rafa Nadal is currently out due to injury, the umpteenth unfortunately that is blocking him in recent months and the drop in the standings is mainly due to this, as well as obviously advancing age.

This week the Majorcan loses the 500 points from last year's Acapulco tournament. Rublev has thus overtaken Nadal in the standings and theoretically (it depends on the ATP tournament in Doha) even Felix Auger Aliassime can surpass the Iberian legend.

Rafael Nadal's future in the Top-10 also depends on our Jannik Sinner. The Italian, together with the Polish Hubert Hurkacz, is part of the tennis players immediately outside the Top Ten and both are involved in the ATP tournament in Marseille this week.

Rafael Nadal risks the Top-10

Both could thus earn further points and Nadal could get out of the Top-10 at Indian Wells where he should theoretically defend 600 points, given last year's final. Hurkacz and Sinner can thus earn further points and the future of the Spaniard also depends in part on the blue.

After about 18 years, Nadal can incredibly soon get out of the world Top Ten.

In 2022 Rafael Nadal took away several important satisfactions. The Spanish champion experienced a year as a great protagonist and won two Grand Slam titles. Many believed in a defeat for him, a sudden decline due to his constant injuries but Rafa has denied everything, has won several tournaments and above all has brought himself to 22 Grand Slam titles.

Despite the passing years, Rafa still remains in the fight with Novak Djokovic, number one in the world and constant ruler in recent years: the two tennis players currently share the record for Grand Slam titles, both standing at 22.
