American tennis star Reilly Opelka declared doubles players as "the most overpaid athletes in the world" and added "there is not a single doubles player that sells tickets."

Opelka, a former world No 17, suggested in a series of tweets that tennis fans are interested only in doubles when top singles players are playing.

On Twitter, a fan asked Opelka: "Why don't you play doubles slams? think you'd be a top 5 dubs player if you wanted, probably more fun to play a non strenuous match on your slam off days than practice, everyone in the world would want to play with you, and there's ok money in it."

Opelka responded: "Theres wayyy too much $$ in dubs."

One fan agreed with Opelka that doubles players should not be paid that much.

"Dubs players are the most overpaid athletes in the world," Opelka wrote in another tweet.

Another fan noted that doubles players are paid much less than singles players.

Opelka didn't deny that claim but suggested that doubles players don't generate any interest.

"They don't sell a single ticket outside of the UK, unless its singles players playing doubles. For example, Indian Wells.

One fan tried to sarcastically tell Opelka that he is a boring tennis player to watch and that she should not be the one calling out doubles players.

"Yeah but it’s just poor marketing by the ATP. Doubles is way more entertaining then watching some 7 footer blast aces all day," the tweet read.

Opelka responded: "Agreed, but for some reason when I play Medvedev, Casper, or Rafa people seem to watch.. dubs guys dont get opportunities to play those matches."

In 2022, Opelka twice competed in doubles events.

At the Melbourne Summer Set, Opelka and Mackenzie McDonald suffered a first-round loss.

In May, Opelka and Tommy Paul exited the Rome Masters in the first round after losing to Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah.
